Newcastle United has traditionally been a mid-table team, but some of their all-time Premier League statistics and rankings may surprise you.

The question has always been raised by pundits and supporters, is Newcastle United a major club in English football? In terms of its domestic and global following, yes, Newcastle is a major club. In terms of domestic success and trophies, one can make the case for Newcastle since they were successful under Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson in the Top Flight and they played in 14 UEFA tournaments between 1994 and 2006.

Since then, Newcastle have struggled to emulate the success of the past and experienced two relegations since 2008. The best season for Newcastle in recent years was in 2011 when Alan Pardew’s men earned a top five finish with 65 points. With that being said, here are some insightful statistics from Newcastle’s tenure in the Premier League since 1992. All of the statistics used in this article can be found on the Premier League website.

Premier League Wins

Between 1992 and November 10th, 2018, the Magpies have earned 336 wins in the Premier League. This tally ranks Newcastle as the eighth most victorious team in the Top Flight. Newcastle is ahead of ninth-placed Aston Villa (currently in the Championship) by 20 victories and trails seventh-placed Everton by 31 victories.

Premier League Losses

Newcastle will not be proud of this statistic as they have lost 330 Premier League matches since 1992. This total of 330 losses places Newcastle in fourth place on the all-time list for most losses. Newcastle only have three fewer losses than Aston Villa in third place and have five more losses than Tottenham in fifth.

Premier League Goals

This next statistic may come as a surprise to younger Toon fans, but Newcastle were, once upon a time, a high scoring machine. Since 1992, the Magpies have scored a total of 1,216 goals in Premier League action. This makes Newcastle the eighth highest scoring team in league history. An additional fun fact when it comes to goals is that Alan Shearer scored 148 times for Newcastle in the Premier League.

Premier League Clean Sheets

Newcastle are proud of their defensive work rate and since the inception of the Premier League they have earned 234 clean sheets. This tally places the Magpies in ninth place on the all-time list. With Martin Dubravka in goal that total should continue to rise.

Premier League Saves

Last, but not least, Newcastle’s goalkeepers have made 472 saves between the sticks. This tally puts Newcastle in 14th place in the all-time list for Premier League saves, just 13 saves fewer than Southampton and 18 more saves than Burnley.
