With Matt Ritchie struggling to make a big impact, Christian Atsu’s speed could be a gamechanger in Newcastle United’s starting lineup.
Newcastle United are coming off of two straight victories and Rafa Benitez and his staff will be looking at ways to improve this side during the international break. I think there is a move they can try out on one of the wings that can help open up the attack. Matt Ritchie, the steady starter on the right wing, has been average at best this season. Through 11 matches, he has zero goals and only one assist. His main calling card, per usual, is his work rate. He hustles around the pitch and contributes defensively and offensively. But, the lack of production is unavoidable. There is a player sitting behind him on the bench that could bring a spark to Newcastle United’s budding attack.
Christian Atsu has come off the bench in the two Newcastle United wins and he’s been a boost of energy in limited shifts. He’s able to run at and past defenders and create chances from those movements. Last season, he was the usual starter on the left wing before Kenedy took over. His issue was finishing chances after making great runs. But now with Salomon Rondon in the middle, Atsu’s ability to cut behind the backline could allow for him to set up the big Venezuelan in the area.
While Atsu’s ability is useful as a super sub, running at weary defenders, I think Ritchie can fill that role, too. He would be able to come off the bench and use with work rate against opponents that are fatigued, mentally and physically. The only downside to not starting him would be losing his set-piece ability for a big chunk of the match. But, he hasn’t contributed much this year on dead balls and the club has Kenedy’s left foot and the right foot of Jonjo Shelvey and Ki.
Now, this article is not to say Ritchie has been a major weakness for the club. As I mentioned above, he works extremely hard and plays with passion every match. I simply think the explosive speed of Atsu could open things up for Newcastle United moving forward. They should give it a chance for the next few matches.
