Newcastle United split points with the Saints on the road today.
The search for Newcastle United’s first win will go on another week. Playing on the road vs. Southampton, everything finished level at zero. We take a deep dive into the disappointing match.
Top Toons
Martin Dubravka: In the moments he was called upon, the Newcastle United keeper stepped up. He made a couple big stops and did well to earn a clean sheet on the road.
Jamaal Lascelles: The captain did well to snuff out some Southampton attacks and he helped control the ball on the backline as the club tried to build into their offense.
DeAndre Yedlin: As the broadcast mentioned, Yedlin was a top performer today. The speedster did well to race back and cut off dangerous moments and he tried to get involved in the lifeless Newcastle United attack.
Mediocre Magpies
Ayoze Perez: After being a top scorer for the club last season and playing in a playmaking role, Perez struggled to make an impact on the match. The one moment he had in the area ended with no shot on goal or chance created.
Mohamed Diame: He is absolutely back to the poor form he carried for the first year and a half with the club. He’s slow, poor in distribution, and constantly loses possession.
Kenedy: The winger was active and involved, but neither of those things do anything on the scoreline if you aren’t clinical in your crossing and striking. He is looking better lately, but he needs to score or assist to help a lifeless attack.
Quick Kicks
- TOO MANY BACKHEELS! I lost track of how many were attempted in the first half, but I’m not sure more than one connected.
- For anyone that didn’t watch the match live, I wouldn’t recommend watching it back later on. There is no bite to the attack at all and it makes for some very unwatchable soccer.
- Dubravka’s early save was massive after the mishit shot for Southampton gave them a 2-on-1 in front of goal. The Slovakian turned the effort away from point-blank range.
- Yoshinori Muto made a couple good runs, but both of them were closer to the wing and that left no striker in the middle of the area to get on the end of a cross.
- Without question, Salomon Rondon and Ki must start moving forward. They brought some quality in their substitute appearances and they could bring life into a sluggish attack. Articles to come on both players this week.
