Desperate for more production up top, Newcastle United should look into these rotation strikers in the Premier League for loans in January.
Saturday’s match vs. Brighton was a perfect example of why Newcastle United need someone they can rely on up top. With Salomon Rondon working his way back from injury and only a few goals between Joselu and Yoshinori Muto, the Magpies will be on the market again for a striker in January. They won’t have loads of money to bring in a star, but there are backup options in the EPL available that could be feasible on loan. These five players top that list of potential targets.
Danny Welbeck
The Arsenal target man finds himself in a rotation with Pierre=Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. He is a proven option in the Premier League with 42 EPL goals in his time with the Gunners and Manchester United. His all-around play at striker could be exactly what the Magpies need.
Jermain Defoe
It feels like Defoe has been in the Premier League forever. With nearly 500 EPL matches, the 36-year-old has scored 163 goals and added 27 assists. He has eight seasons with double-digit goals. He’s only made two appearances this season. Hopefully, the Toon Army could forgive him for his stint with Sunderland. His age wouldn’t be a major factor because it would be a loan deal, not a long-term plan.
Chicharito
Javier Hernandez has not experienced a ton of success with West Ham after joining the club last summer. The all-time leading goalscorer for the Mexican national team has 45 career EPL goals, most of which came during his time with Manchester United. He is considered a poacher, but he could help bury the chances being wasted this season.
Christian Benteke
A big, powerful striker, Benteke has scored 69 goals in almost 200 Premier League appearances. He’s only managed to get four matches with Crystal Palace this season and he would be motivated to show he can still produce consistently in the English top flight.
Dominic Solanke
Unlike the other players on this list, Solanke is more about potential than previous production. The 21-year-old joined Liverpool last summer after his Chelsea contract expired.
He has not made an EPL appearance this season and wants to get some match time to increase his standing in the English national team. He could find those minutes with Newcastle United and prove he can play consistently in the Premier League.
