12/9/2017: Leicester City 3, Newcastle United 2

With Newcastle United stuck in a six-match winless streak, they came close to getting a draw against Leicester City at St. James’ Park, losing 3-2.

Dwight Gayle was the star of the show for Newcastle United. He got behind the defense and set up Joselu for the club’s opening goal, then scored the equalizer on his own in the second half. The two Leicester City goals were caused by the defense giving too much space. Riyad Mahrez made a solo run before firing past Karl Darlow from outside the area, then Demarai Gray had too much time and scored the second goal into the upper 90 off of a deflection.

The deciding goal was an own goal by Ayoze Perez. Shinji Okazaki was left unmarked after a quick break from the Foxes and Perez rushed back to defend, only to poke the ball past Darlow.

Opposite of the doom and gloom state of affairs during their first meeting, this time around it was an occasion for two celebrations for Toon Army. Newcastle United defeated Leicester City at King Power Stadium and clinched their safety in the Premier League.

Jonjo Shelvey scored a rare goal to open things up, following a lovely fake shot. The second tally for Newcastle United would arrive in spectacular fashion from Ayoze Perez. Off of a long pass, he was able to chip Kasper Schmeichel on his first touch for one of the Magpies’ goals of the season.

Jamie Vardy scored a tap-in late, but it wasn’t enough to deny NUFC the win or their safety.
