Newcastle United played to a scoreless draw with Crystal Palace and we look at who impressed and who disappointed.

It was another defensive approach for Newcastle United as they traveled to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace. They were able to come away with a point despite being the second best side on the pitch.

Top Toons

Joselu: The striker came off the bench and made a very positive impact. He had a quality effort on a bicycle kick and worked hard to pressure the Palace backline.

Martin Dubravka: He didn’t see a boatload of shots, but he did well on the ones he saw. He came away with four saves.

Federico Fernandez: The entire Newcastle United backline was adequate against Palace, but Fernandez continues to prove why he was a great summer signing.

Mediocre Magpies

Ayoze Perez: The best chance of the match belonged to Perez after a Palace error. Rather than knock the ball past the keeper, he fired a less than powerful effort directly at him. He was also not quick enough in his decision making and lost the ball on a few quality opportunities.

Kenedy: It was another disappointing effort for the Chelsea loanee. He lacked the quick pace and creativity that made him a hit for Newcastle United last season.

Mohamed Diame: Poor form continues for Diame, as well. He didn’t pass the ball well and was clumsy in his dribbling.

Quick Kicks

  • I was skeptical of the halftime substitute move to bring on Joselu for Rondon. But, the Spanish striker immediately involved himself in the match more than his predecessor.
  • If anyone has seen the Kenedy from his loan stint last year, please bring him back. The winger has been hard to watch for most of the season, not able to dance around defenders or create many chances. Jacob Murphy or Christian Atsu should start ahead of him for the time being.
  • Newcastle United can thank Mamadou Sakho for the point. He missed a wide open header from point-blank range in the second half.
  • Paul Dummett did well against Wilfried Zaha.
  • You could tell Rafa Benitez did not want to play too much in the attack when he started Mohamed Diame over Ki. Mo has been in poor form, but he brings more defensive prowess than the playmaker Ki.
