Three reasons why Newcastle United would be a good investment
By Durim Halimi
Reports are stating that Mike Ashley is lowering his asking price and is ready to sell Newcastle United.
New reports are being published stating that Mike Ashley is ready to sell the club for an asking price of £300 million. While these reports are good news for Rafa Benitez and the Toon Army, it is worth acknowledging that Ashley has expressed interest in selling the club multiple times in the past, but nothing ever occurred.
With tension between the Toon Army and Mike Ashley at an all-time low, it would make the most sense for the business tycoon to finally sell the club. The weekly protests from supporters and the negative exposure Ashley received in the U.K. Parliament could be significant factors that are making him want to step away from the club.
With that being said, the staff here at Newcastle Toons have decided to utilize our platform to support the Toon Army’s mission by explaining why Newcastle United would be a good investment for prospective buyers.
Potential Success
Under Mike Ashley’s regime, Newcastle has simply been a sleeping giant of English football. Everyone in England knows the quality of football that Newcastle should be playing in, yet the club’s reputation continues to sink. Newcastle used to be a major club, but now they are merely an inconsistent mid-table side fighting for survival most seasons.
Experiencing two relegations in one decade damaged the club and created a toxic environment on Tyneside. Prior to Mike Ashley, Newcastle enjoyed the presence of talented players and the club maintained high standards of football quality at the domestic and continental level.
The arrival of new ownership would not transform Newcastle into a title contender overnight, but if Rafa Benitez – a world class, Champions League-winning manager – receives financial support from the executive level, Newcastle could transform into a regular member of the top six.
As a result, not only would the club regain its prominence, but new owners would also profit from the team’s success. Money from ticket sales, television rights, high table placement and participating in European competitions would turn Newcastle United into a financial haven for new owners.
Community Support and Positive Image
Newcastle United is the focal point of the community in Newcastle upon Tyne. The city bleeds black and white and its residents have been nothing but loyal to the club regardless of performance. Mike Ashley has essentially destroyed his relationship with the fans and the community by refusing to invest in the club.
The arrival of a new owner(s) would be fervently welcomed on Tyneside. As long as the new owner(s) is passionate about the club, provides sufficient funds for the club and is active in terms of community engagement, stability and optimism will surround Newcastle United.
In addition, every investment comes with risks, especially when that investment is centered on a football club in the most popular league in the world. However, any owner that is willing to come in and help transform Newcastle United will undoubtedly feel the support of the community and enjoy a positive reputation that will help strengthen their overall portfolio.
