Toon Takeaways from Newcastle United’s 0-0 draw vs. Cardiff City
In an underwhelming match from both sides, Newcastle United and Cardiff City finished level.
Newcastle United went on the road to Cardiff City and laid an egg against one of the sides commonly predicted to be relegated. Let’s take a closer look at the scoreless draw.
Top Toons
Jonjo Shelvey: In such a poorly played match, Shelvey shined bright like a diamond. The midfielder made incisive passes, pushed the ball forward, and worked hard defensively.
Mediocre Magpies
Kenedy: His worst game in Newcastle United kit, by a mile. The winger was sloppy on the ball the entire match and according to OptaJoe, he is the first player since 2010 to play the entire first half and complete zero passes. Then, he had the blatant kick out which may cost him and he poorly struck the potential match-winning penalty.
Isaac Hayden: He gave Kenedy a run for his money on poor form today. Coming off the bench, his passing was dreadful. Then, he blasted into the back of Josh Murphy’s legs, getting sent off in the 66th minute.
Mohamed Diame: This was the same Diame we saw in 2016/17 and early last season. He was clumsy, offensively and defensively, in the midfield.
Quick Kicks
- There’s a really good chance Kenedy gets suspended for three matches due to his kick out. It was not caught in the moment, but it merits a ban.
- Contrary to the commentary, I agreed with Hayden’s foul being a red. It was the definition of reckless and dangerous, flying into the back of a player’s legs with no chance of winning the ball.
- Ki should start next week for Diame. Mighty Mo was in poor form and playing another distributor next to Shelvey can really open things up.
- I didn’t love Rafa Benitez’s substitute choices today, expect for Yoshinori Muto. I would’ve preferred Ki over Hayden. Also, Jacob Murphy was an odd choice. I know it would’ve required taking off a decent Joselu, I think most would have preferred Salomon Rondon. The striker could have used his physicality late to earn a winner.
- Speaking of Muto, he’s been very impressive to me early on. He works hard, has quality pace, and has good vision in the final third.
- The overall quality of this match was poor and not enjoyable to watch.
