According to 11v11.com, Newcastle United and Cardiff City first squared off back in 1922. The first meeting finished scoreless. The Bluebirds held the edge in the early years of the rivalry, winning five of the first eight meetings. All of those fixtures came in League Division One play.

In the first cup match up between the two sides, Newcastle United came away with a 2-0 win in the 1926 FA Cup.

From 1930 to 1960, Newcastle United won seven of the 14 matches, with Cardiff only winning three. The Magpies continued to hold the edge in the decades that followed.

During the two most recent relegated seasons for Newcastle United, they’ve fared well against Cardiff. In the 2009/10 Championship campaign, the Toon won both matches. The first was a 1-0 result, with a 5-1 drubbing up next. Andy Carroll and Peter Lovenkrands each bagged a brace. During the 2016/17 season, Newcastle United swept Cardiff again. Christian Atsu scored in both matches, with Yoan Gouffran and Isaac Hayden each provided a goal.

The clubs will be meeting for the third time in Premier League play on Saturday. The first two match ups came in the 2013-14 season, with the Magpies taking both results. Loic Remy scored three goals against both matches. During that season, Cardiff City would defeat Newcastle United in the third round of the FA Cup by a 2-1 scoreline.
