After back-to-back friendly draws, Newcastle United got blown out 4-0 by Braga yesterday.

While preseason friendlies are more about the development than the result, yesterday’s match was still a startling display from Newcastle United. In their fourth fixture of the preseason, the Magpies were defeated handily, 4-0, by S.C. Braga.

Playing their second straight match in Portugal, Newcastle United started Dubravka, Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett, Hayden, Diame, Atsu, Perez, Ritchie, Gayle. Jonjo Shelvey sat with a small knock. It was notable that Dwight Gayle started, the subject of major transfer rumors. Ayoze Perez created some early action, but neither club could break through in the first half.

Rafa Benitez made one change at the break, replacing Lascelles with Fabian Schar. Ricardo Horta would break out the offense in the second stanza. The winger scored in the 53rd minute. His goal would be followed by Joao Novais in the 77th minute. Within the last ten minutes of the match, Braga added a third and fourth score. Newcastle United began making changes around the 65th minute with Ki replacing Hayden and Jacob Murphy taking over for Christian Atsu. Karl Darlow, Javier Manquillo, Joselu, Sean Longstaff, and Cal Roberts all made appearances.

The club’s starters only gave up the first goal, but Newcastle United have not looked a 10th best side in the Premier League during their preseason. They opened with a 2-0 win over St. Patrick’s Athletic, before drawing with Hull City and FC Porto. Now, after a massive loss, they will host FC Augsburg at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
