Florian Lejeune attracted attention during the 2017/18 campaign, but will the Frenchman exceed expectations next season?
Florian Lejeune was recently included in a new Premier League series as a player who is expected to shine in the 2018/19 Premier League campaign. Premier League writer Adrian Clark is a firm believer that Lejeune will have a meaningful impact next season, and I share the same opinion.
After coming to Newcastle from Eibar last summer, it took Lejeune a few months to adapt to English football. The pace in England was problematic, but the central defender gradually became more comfortable. From my personal observations this season, Lejeune was the fourth-best defender for Newcastle, but the 27-year-old has the potential to be great.
Lejeune only played in 24 matches for Newcastle during the 2017/18 campaign, but the French defender can expect a heavier workload next season. With that being said, it is important to note that more playing time leads to new expectations. Will Lejeune significantly improve to become a top player for Newcastle next season?
2018/19 Player Outlook
Several factors will influence how players in every position will perform next season. Some of these factors include roster changes among opponents, and the season schedule that will be released on June 14th. The greatest factor, however, will be individual work ethic and determination to improve in the off-season.
Lejeune earned Rafa Benitez‘s trust after being named a starter for several matches to close out the season. This will most certainly provide Lejeune with a boost of confidence heading into the 2018/19 campaign. Lejeune’s primary objective next season should be to translate that growing confidence into strong performances for the club.

Playing alongside Jamaal Lascelles has helped Lejeune become a more consistent and reliable defender. The following four statistics from the 2017/18 season make me agree with Adrian Clarke’s perspective on Lejeune’s future outlook:
- 61% tackle success rating
- 128 recoveries
- 108 accurate long balls
- No errors leading to goals
These four statistics stand out because they show just how efficient and reliable Lejeune is for Newcastle. Lejeune’s strength and frame enable him to make important tackles, and his superior passing makes counter-attacks more effective.

Rafa Benitez and the Toon Army will expect Lejeune to maintain his good run of form and step into a leadership role. If Lejeune can maintain this production, there is no doubt that Newcastle United will, once again, be a top defensive unit.
