When Jonjo Shelvey played well, Newcastle United played well this season.

The season began horrifically for Jonjo Shelvey. Sent off for a stomp in Newcastle United’s opener, the midfielder had to work his way back into the rotation. Once he did, he showcased why he is considered one of the most talented passers in England.

2017-18 stats: 30 appearances, one goal, three assists, 157 accurate long balls

Contract runs until: June 2021

The opening match against Tottenham was a disaster for Jonjo Shelvey, but those issues disappeared amidst a spectacular run of form in the second half of the season. The midfielder’s passing ability adds another dimension to the line-up, and his work alongside Mohamed Diame was outstanding. With a World Cup snub providing extra motivation, expect a strong showing from Shelvey in 2018-19.

Not only should Jonjo Shelvey be a regular starter for Newcastle, he should also be playing in Russia this summer. After a rough disciplinary start to the season, Shelvey has transformed himself into the club’s primary facilitator in midfield. Shelvey is not an explosive offensive midfielder, but he is a dynamic midfielder that Rafa Benitez should build his midfield around.

Simply put, Newcastle United went as Jonjo Shelvey went this season. The mercurial midfielder sprayed the ball all over the field for the Toon. His accuracy and vision on long passes are rare skills and that makes him one of the most important players for Newcastle. With less than elite talent up top, imagine the impact he could have if Rafa Benitez is able to add a dangerous striker this summer. If he can keep his temper under control, Shelvey could have a massive breakout year in 2018.

Shelvey was very unfortunate to not be named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2018 World Cup, but it could be blessing in disguise as he will return with fresh legs next season. Jonjo has formed a formidable partnership in the center of midfield with Mo Diame, as Diame’s industrious defensive work allows Shelvey the freedom to pick the ball up further up the pitch and put his excellent passing ability to good use. Rafa seems to have coached some of the ill-discipline out of him, as despite having a reputation for picking up red cards, he hasn’t received a single card since December. Only one goal and three assists in the Premier League this season may appear a little low for a starting midfielder, but if Newcastle can sign a better striker this summer, Shelvey will thrive. Important first team player.
