Newcastle 5 – Sunderland 1 (October 2010)

Newcastle United had returned to the top flight after one season in the Championship, and St. James’ Park was ready for another Tyne-Wear derby. They received all that and more, thanks to Newcastle United’s 5-1 thrashing of Sunderland on Halloween in 2010.

A hat-trick from Kevin Nolan and Shola Ameobi’s brace did the damage, as Sunderland were simply unable to keep pace with the Toon’s attack that day.

The strategy was simple, as United focused on playing the ball wide and getting it inside to their forwards. Ameobi and Andy Carroll caused issues for the Black Cats defence throughout the encounter, and there was little that the visitors could do to stop the goals.

The game is noteworthy for the amount of cards as well, as nine yellows and one red were issued by referee Phil Dowd.

Newcastle would go on to confirm their place in the Premier League, and eventually find some success under manager Alan Pardew (who took over later that season). Another drop to the Championship would follow in 2016, but Rafa Benitez now has the club secure in the first division once again.
