Sunderland 1 – Newcastle 6 (December 1955)

The 1950s were a period of great success for Newcastle United, as the Toon captured three FA Cup titles. Sunderland were a formidable side as well, and looked like title contenders to begin the 1955-56 campaign. That was all until they received a late Christmas present from the Magpies.

Newcastle hammered Sunderland by a scoreline of 6-1 on Boxing Day, and it marked the record margin of victory for a United win in the Tyne-Wear derby (the record was originally set in 1920 and equalled in this fixture).

The match featured braces for Jackie Milburn, Bill Curry and Vic Keeble, as the Newcastle attack completely dominated the home side with four goals in the opening 30 minutes. Sunderland were within striking distance of Sir Matt Busby’s Manchester United at the top of the table, but this emphatic loss had a massive effect on the rest of their campaign.

The Wearsiders would never truly be able to find their form, and would ultimately finish the term in ninth place.

It is incredible to look back at that period, and compare it to some of the battles in recent years between the two sides. Most recently playing in the midst of a relegation scrap, this particular decade saw FA Cups lifted and top-flight title races in the North East.

Confidence is important to success. When Newcastle United beat Sunderland 6-1 in 1955, they destroyed their rival’s confidence.
