No Newcastle United match this weekend? No problem.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are preparing for a key fixture tonight, looking to extend their Premier League winning streak to five games as they face Everton. This past weekend was not very kind to Tyne-Wear rival Sunderland, and two Toon fans made sure that they were there to enjoy the struggle.

The Black Cats were relegated to League One on Saturday afternoon following a 2-1 loss to Burton Albion, and Newcastle supporters were in the away end to witness the event. With less than five minutes left and clinging to a one-goal advantage, strikes from Darren Bent (86’) and Liam Boyce (90’) sealed the result and sent travelling fans into hysterics.

In the middle of the celebration were Newcastle United fans, and they were certainly happy with what they were seeing at the Stadium of Light.

The irony of course is that Sunderland were doing everything that they could to avoid something like this happening at their grounds.

The club cancelled a number of away tickets for their upcoming encounter with Wolverhampton to close the season, fearing that Newcastle supporters would be in the stands.

Fans in delight

Since Sunderland’s fate was decided on Saturday, Toon fans have been having the last laugh on social media.

While some point out that a North East side going down like this can actually be a bad thing for the sport, few on Tyneside will be forgetting the ridicule that they endured from Sunderland supporters when they were relegated from the top flight two years ago.
