A chaotic situation could potentially be on the horizon for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez have plenty to be proud of this season, as a recent four-match winning streak has helped to secure Premier League safety for 2018-19. The future of Benitez on Tyneside has received much speculation as of late, and one former Magpie warned of what owner Mike Ashley could be facing if the Spanish coach does walk away.

A key player during the 1980s for the Toon, John Anderson saw many ups and downs during his time at St. James’ Park. When examining the current managerial situation, the 58-year-old anticipates an extremely negative reaction if Benitez chooses to depart the North East.

Speaking to Off The Ball this week, Anderson predicted a tough situation for Ashley specifically if United’s manager had left this past summer. “If Mike Ashley had of got rid of him he’d have had an uprising on his hands.”

He also spoke of Benitez’s relationship with the fans, and what he means to the club at the moment.

“Rafa Benitez is a huge part of the football club, because supporters have taken to him. He’s bought into the culture of the club, he’s bought into the culture of the area, and he’s bought into the culture of the people.”

These aspects are not easily replaceable, and Anderson knows that it would be a massive disappointment for the Toon Army if a new manager was needed now.

Something will change

The priority now for Ashley is to find a way to push the Magpies forward, whether he is a part of it or not. Thanks to the squad being able to avoid relegation this term, financial situations should be more positive overall.

Providing adequate transfer funds this summer is one option, as is once again pursuing the sale of the club. Either way, the manager is an important figure in these plans.
