Competition in the squad has been a major positive for Newcastle United

Why January additions had an uplifting influence for Newcastle United.
Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez have been enjoying a strong run of form as of late, as a win against Arsenal tomorrow would be the club’s fourth consecutive Premier League victory. Several factors have contributed to this success, from strong midfield play to solid contributions along the back-line.
While the January transfer period did not necessarily provide all the reinforcements fans would have wanted, two individuals have motivated the squad to work harder and provide more for the club. In his press conference yesterday, Benitez hailed Martin Dubrvaka and Kenedy for bringing competition to St. James’ Park.
That competition has made an impact in various ways, both mentally and physically. Examples include Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey, two Magpies at the top of their game at the moment.
Kenedy has pushed the likes of Ritchie and Christian Atsu to be better, and to demand more of themselves on the training ground.
Dubravka has earned the number one spot at the back over Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow, but he did that through his efforts in training and in matches.

Nothing is guaranteed, and that includes spots anywhere in Benitez’s team. Ultimately, that attitude can show you the best of what a footballer can be.
Strong mentality
This competition helps to strengthen the spirit of a club, and can push a group towards overcoming obstacles.
Newcastle’s current form showcases this aspect, and it nearly has the Toon above the 40-point milestone this season. With both Dubravka and Kenedy performing well, making their loan deals permanent is a massive summer priority.
