The young midfielder has found new life at Newcastle United, and he has become a key player for the club.
The 22-year-old Brazilian has thrived under the guidance of Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United since his arrival from Chelsea in January. Kenedy’s reputation and potential earned him a starting role in his debut for Newcastle against Burnley and he has not looked back since.
Known as a dual winger who can play in midfield and defense, Benitez has best utilized Kenedy as a winger in midfield. Kenedy is a dynamic player, who has proven to make an impact even with average performances. While the youngster still has plenty of room for growth, here are a few ways in which Kenedy has risen to primacy on the Newcastle roster.
Superior Passing
In his seven appearances for Newcastle United, Kenedy has shown that he values collective success over individual praise. He has demonstrated this through his actions on the pitch as a pass-first midfielder.
Kenedy is always seeking an open team-mate, but what is more impressive is his passing accuracy.
Coming from Chelsea, it was expected that Kenedy would bring polished fundamental skills with him, but practicing alongside Jonjo Shelvey has aided his development. From aerial crosses to quick through-balls, Kenedy’s passing has enabled Newcastle to become more effective in the penalty area.
A primary example of this can be found in his game-winning assist to Ayoze Perez against Huddersfield Town.
Finisher in Midfield
Newcastle have started to score more goals in recent matches, however, they are coming from midfield. Due to the poor form of Dwight Gayle and Joselu this season, the Magpies have been dependent on their midfielders for goals. It took six matches, but Kenedy joined the Newcastle scoring list with two impressive goals against Southampton.
While Kenedy is not expected to score in high numbers, he has shown that he has the skill to get in position and create scoring opportunities. Kenedy is occupied with scoping out team-mates, but his ability to cut inside and curl shots has made him a frequent target.
Internal Competition
Supporters and pundits can only judge players based on their performances in matches, but Kenedy’s true impact is felt in training. Kenedy’s arrival from Chelsea sparked a much needed internal competition between Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy.
This competition behind the scenes has brought out the best in most players, especially Matt Ritchie. Kenedy is far from being a team leader, but his talent has created a collective sense of urgency to perform at an elite level.

Rafa Benitez was able to secure the Brazilian’s services for a few months, but his next objective is to make Kenedy a permanent resident on Tyneside. Having Kenedy in a Newcastle jersey next season will most certainly make the Magpies more competitive.
