Despite dominating the game, Newcastle United finish level in a friendly on Sunday.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez wanted to ensure that the players finished off their training camp in Spain this week with a strong showing against Belgian side Royal Antwerp, in the midst of the club’s current three-week break. The Magpies boss rotated his squad throughout, and there were several positives at the Pinatar Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Toon finished level with Antwerp, as a 1-1 scoreline does not emphasise how well Newcastle actually played. Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie were particularly effective early on, as they helped to control possession and the tempo of the game in the midfield.

The atmosphere created in Murcia produced a competitive fight on the pitch as the fixture progressed, split into three halves of 45 minutes each.

Shelvey and Mikel Merino came close to opening the scoring, but it was Ritchie who would put United ahead in the 40th minute.

The Scottish international was able to perfectly chip Antwerp goalkeeper Sinan Bolat, after coming off his line far too soon.

The second period saw the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark subbed on, and the intensity of the contest was also on the rise. The two sides battled, and play featured a sharp edge. However, it was Newcastle in control for the most part.

The third period would bring more line-up changes, and an equaliser for Anwterp. Alexander Corryn was able to create space and find the back of the net.

The Magpies had a winning chance late, but Dwight Gayle failed to convert a penalty before the final whistle. The club will host Huddersfield Town on March 31.

Youngsters Victor Fernandez and Nathan Harker both gained noteworthy first-team experience on the day as well.
