Newcastle United will be travelling next week, but it’s no holiday.
Newcastle United have an interesting situation arriving after this weekend, as today’s match against Southampton will be their last until March 31 when they host Huddersfield Town. Due to Tottenham’s involvement in the FA Cup, their game versus the Magpies has been postponed.
So what to do with all of this extra time on their hands? Manager Rafa Benitez has a plan, and it involves a trip to Spain for training. Benitez stated in yesterday’s press conference that the squad will travel for a four-day camp, with a friendly expected to be confirmed during that period as well.
Reports have linked Belgium’s Royal Antwerp as the possible opponent for that exhibition match.

This decision certainly makes sense on many levels, as 21 days off could potentially have negative effects if the team are not engaged and working to keep fitness levels high.
Of course comfortable in the surroundings of his home country, Benitez will want to keep his Newcastle players sharp.
Rest, recovery and a real debut
In his press conference, the Magpies boss also provided updates on the status of two injuries that are affecting the team. Both Jonjo Shelvey and Islam Slimani are working their way back towards full fitness.
Shelvey appears to be the most promising, as there is an outside chance that he could feature in today’s game.
For Slimani, the news is not as encouraging. Progress appears to be good in some respects, but Benitez was unable to even confirm his availability for the Huddersfield fixture.
The bright side to this time away from Premier League action is that the line-up should be healthy and ready to attack the final eight matches of the campaign.
