4 – Rob Lee (1992-2002)

Rob Lee was a part of so much with Newcastle United, as his ten years with the club brought many dramatic changes and incredible successes. With more than 300 appearances for the Toon, it is always worth noting that he may be the overall best purchase for the Geordies when considering the price tag.

Arriving from Charlton Athletic in 1992, a reported fee of £700,000 was an absurd bargain for a midfielder that was a constant positive presence.

Lee battled and fought for United, a part of the group that brought the Magpies up from the Second Division before having a go at the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

His own skill helped to drive the team towards the top of the table, as did his infectious positive spirit and leadership.

Like many of the squad at the time, managerial changes did not always help Lee’s performances as time went on. But just like for the fans, Sir Bobby Robson was an uplifting figure for the midfielder.

He departed the North East in 2002, but Lee’s time with the club will always be remembered in a tremendous way.

Rob Lee brought numerous benefits to Newcastle United, and the Toon certainly received plenty for how much they paid for his transfer.
