5 – Paul Gascoigne (1985-1988)

The countdown continues in a similar area from the previous choice, as Paul Gascoigne did not play with Newcastle United for a long period. But for what he did and for what he went on to achieve, “Gazza” will always be viewed as a national treasure.

Regarded by many as the most technically gifted English player of a generation, Gascoigne’s incredible journey in football began at St. James’ Park. Born and raised in Gateshead, the midfielder had a strong connection with the Toon Army right from the start.

Working his way up the academy ranks with quite a bit of hype and plenty of flair on the pitch, Gascoigne signed a professional contract with Newcastle in 1985. In only three short years, he became the subject of a bidding war between clubs and began earning caps for the Three Lions.

Gascoigne eventually joined Tottenham, and an unforgettable run throughout the game for different sides over the years continued to produce magical displays. His personal life garnered attention following his retirement, plagued by mental health worries and struggles with alcohol.

However, anyone following his Twitter account these days is pleased to see the joyful and wonderful soul of Gazza back in full effect (I know I do).

He went on to complete different chapters of his story away from Tyneside, but Paul Gascoigne will always be a Newcastle United legend.
