Newcastle United: Top ten goalkeepers in club history
By Roy Emanuel
3 – Willie McFaul (1966-1975)
Few accomplishments stand out in fans’ memory quite like European glory, and earning silverware at that stage is forever special. To add positive steps as a manager later in his career, the contributions of Willie McFaul at Newcastle United are absolutely incredible.
Along with over 300 appearances for the Toon across all competitions, the Northern Ireland international was the goalkeeper for the team that won the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
With his excellent reflexes and extremely smart positioning, McFaul was a steady presence behind a supremely talented Newcastle back-line at the time.
In the late 1980s, McFaul’s superb communication skills and player management was evident. Along with the development of a young Peter Beardsley, his eye for talent gave him the confidence to start a teenage prodigy by the name of Paul Gascoigne.
Unless of course we want to count the Intertoto Cup (I know I do!), the Fairs Cup stands as the Toon’s only European title. That aspect only makes McFaul’s legend as a goalkeeper grow, and as manager he assisted in setting United up for future success.
Few players can bring as much on and off the pitch as Willie McFaul has brought to Newcastle United and the Toon Army.
