4 – Pavel Srníček (1991-1998, 2006-2007)

Competition is a part of life in football, and mistakes can cost a player dearly when it comes to their role in a team. The Premier League is a major stage, and Pavel Srníček fought for his place in the Newcastle United team throughout “The Entertainers” era.

The Czech international made more than 150 appearances with the Toon, and made some absolutely memorable saves along the way.

Srníček did not get off to the easiest of starts on Tyneside, as manager Jim Smith was gone within two months of signing the keeper. Once the club achieved promotion under Kevin Keegan, things did not become any less difficult.

Tommy Wright, Mike Hooper and Shaka Hislop all made sure that Srníček had to battle for playing time. And that is exactly what he did.

A fan favourite and regarded well by all of his former team-mates, Srníček even made sure to make Newcastle his final stop when he returned for a short stint in 2006.

Tragically in December of 2015, Srníček passed away at the age of 47. From the Toon Army to those that he played the game with, his memory will continue to live on in the North East.

“The Entertainers” needed a goalkeeper. They had that and more with Pavel Srníček.
