9 – Tim Krul (2005-2017)

Injuries can frustrate a footballer throughout many years playing the game, and those issues can be difficult to recover from. Goalkeeper Tim Krul experienced that throughout his time at St. James’ Park, but always displayed the fight and the loyalty that made him a fan favourite.

The Dutch international spent more than a decade on Tyneside and made 185 appearances for the club across all competitions.

His journey began with proving himself, going out on-loan to Falkirk and Carlisle United. Krul then received an opportunity with the Magpies during the 2009-10 season in the Championship, and was showing what he could bring at the position.

For many years following, he was a consistent presence in the Premier League for United. His distribution was excellent, and he had an incredible ability to stop a penalty-kick as well. But fitness always seemed to be a concern, and Krul struggled to stay on the pitch.

As injuries kept him from his best over the years, Newcastle worked out deals to get Krul more playing time and get himself back in optimal condition. Stops at Ajax and AZ Alkmaar were unfortunately not as successful as many would have hoped for.

In 2017, Krul joined former Magpies boss Chris Hughton at Brighton & Hove Albion.

A key member of the squads throughout this decade, Tim Krul will always receive a warm welcome in the North East.
