2 – Jimmy Lawrence (1904-1922)

One of Newcastle United’s first goalkeepers ended up creating a template for legendary performances, and along the way helped to lead the Geordies to their first triumphs in English football. With an astonishing 496 appearances across all competitions, goalkeeper Jimmy Lawrence was a part of more Magpies games than any other player in club history.

The Scottish shot-stopper captured three top-flight titles, along with the 1910 FA Cup. The Toon also reached four other cup finals with Lawrence at the back.

A true star in his time, the Glasgow native helped to establish Newcastle as one of the most successful sides of the early 1900s.

With a supreme level of confidence in his work, Lawrence had a knack for continuing to improve his overall game as he aged.

Ultimately, the keeper cast a massive shadow on the players who would fill his spot in future decades. Similar to the exploits of Ronnie Simpson, Lawrence was able to keep his play at a high level throughout his many years at St. James’ Park.

He was also able to ensure that the team was still in good shape when he departed, as the Toon lifted another FA Cup in 1924 (two years after he left the North East).

Jimmy Lawrence will forever be a legend for Newcastle United, and he was an original in more ways than one.
