It was a special day in a variety of ways during Newcastle United’s victory this weekend.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are certainly pleased with Sunday’s victory, a 1-0 result over Manchester United that was a special moment for many Toon fans. The game also featured touching tributes to several individuals close to the club, including the late Frankie Sherwood.

The brave four-year-old supporter tragically lost his battle with neuroblastoma this past week, and Newcastle were sure to honour his amazing spirit. Frankie’s family requested that his favourite song be played, and the Oasis classic “Live Forever” was sung during pre-game and half-time at St. James’ Park.

The Toon Army also belted out renditions of “There’s Only One Frankie Sherwood” throughout the afternoon.

In a difficult moment for all of the Sherwood family, it was an emotional showing of support.

To see so many individuals express so much, a truly up-lifting scene played out.

To make the day even more memorable, the Magpies responded on the pitch against Manchester United with an impressive display.

A 1-0 victory arrived at a critical time to get Newcastle out of the relegation zone.

A community that cares

At a time of great suffering and loss, it is inspiring to see a response from the North East and the football community as a whole.

Frankie’s family will carry his memory with them always, and Sunday will likely be remembered quite fondly.
