3) Peter Beardsley – 1993

As Newcastle United were preparing for their first season in the two-year-old Premier League, manager Kevin Keegan knew that he needed someone who would provide a boost to the entire squad. He turned to a familiar face, and signed Peter Beardsley for £1.5 million.

The English international was beginning his second stint on Tyneside, having played alongside Keegan with the Magpies from 1983 to 1987.

Fans will talk of various moments during this period, as Beardsley was such an important part of “The Entertainers” squad that came so close to capturing a top flight title. But what made him so special was his technical ability that left many opponents absolutely lost trying to stop him.

Beardsley’s first campaign back at St. James’ Park was ultimately a statement of intent, as he scored 21 league goals and set the stage for an exciting period of success. While he may not have been able to deliver silverware, the 1990’s were truly unforgettable thanks to his efforts.

For a club to find a technically gifted player is always a positive. Peter Beardsley’s time as a player with Newcastle United was not only a positive, but he motivated team-mates around him to improve as well.
