A historical look at Newcastle United vs. Chelsea in the FA Cup

Newcastle United will face Chelsea in the FA Cup next weekend. How have the clubs fared against one another in the tournament before?

When Newcastle United kicks off against Chelsea a week from today, it will be the 12th time they’ve faced off in the FA Cup. They first met in the tournament back in 1911. Newcastle United won that semifinal match 3-0, before losing to Bradford City in the final.

The clubs would play a pair of quarterfinal matches in 1915 after the first match ended 1-1. Chelsea won the replay on their way to an appearance in the final. They would lose 3-0 to Sheffield United.

Newcastle United and Chelsea wouldn’t meet again in the FA Cup until 1932. The Magpies won a semifinal match 2-1. They defeated Arsenal in the final, the match widely known as the “Over the Line” final. A 4th round match in 1950 saw Chelsea dominate Newcastle United 3-0. The Blues won again in 1959, this time 4-1 in the 3rd round.

In 1996, the clubs would play two matches in the 3rd round. The first match ended 1-1. In the replay, Chelsea would emerge victorious on penalties. The Blues knocked Newcastle United out for the fourth straight time in the 2000 semifinal. The Magpies finally broke the streak in 2005 when they won a 5th round match 1-0.

The most recent FA Cup matchup between the two came in 2006. John Terry scored the lone goal in a Chelsea 6th round victory. Chelsea has won the tournament seven times, the last championship coming in 2012. Newcastle United has six titles and their most recent was in 1955.
