Newcastle United are linked with Jonathan Viera, but a deal isn’t likely.

According to a Telegraph report, Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in Las Palmas midfielder Jonathan Viera. However, a deal for the Spanish attacking player seems far fetched for the Magpies.

The 28 year old Viera has scored twice this season to go along with three assists in La Liga action. He also got a cap with the Spanish national team last year in World Cup qualifying. With Las Palmas struggling this season, the club may be looking to get a high return for a talented veteran player to help build for the future.

Jonathan Viera is reportedly worth around 18 to 20 million. While Rafa Benitez is definitely looking to bolster his squad, especially in the attack, making a move for a midfielder in his late 20’s at that price isn’t likely. The top priority is striker, followed by left back depth, a veteran goalkeeper, then possibly a playmaking midfielder.

This summer, Newcastle United’s biggest transfer move was bringing in Jacob Murphy from Norwich City for around 11 million. I find it hard to believe they will nearly double that for a position that’s not a dire need. Right now, the club needs to ensure they don’t get relegated again. While Viera is a dangerous attacking player capable of scoring or assisting, a striker is the biggest key to safety this season.

Newcastle’s Premier League rivals Burnley and Swansea City have also been linked to Viera, this window and last respectively.
