According to reports, Newcastle United is one of the 50 richest clubs in the world, but it doesn’t feel like it.

Newcastle United was ranked as one of the 50 richest clubs in the world, according to a report. Unfortunately despite that ranking, the club doesn’t feel like one of the financial giants. The 36th richest soccer team in the world made no signings last January and had very few signings this summer, none for top dollar. Owner Mike Ashley is at the center of this. It’s a situation of having rich parents, but getting a small allowance.

That is where the primary frustration lies for Toon Army. You know the club has the funds to make a splash and secure the club’s safety in the Premier League, but ownership won’t loosen the purse strings to allow Rafa Benitez, a world class manager, to bring in the players he needs.

The rumored takeover from Amanda Staveley is music to every Newcastle supporter’s ears. The new ownership would bring in big dollars and would almost surely be willing to spend more freely than Ashley.

Ashley’s total investment in the club could reach 91 million, according to the report. That number is certainly higher than most would assume, but it still doesn’t equate to allowing the necessary funds to go to making sure the club doesn’t get relegated again. Newcastle United, the 12th richest club in England, should not have to battle for safety every year. Hopefully, whenever the takeover completes, the Magpies can start looking like one of the 50 richest clubs in the world.
