Newcastle United carry a strong lead in their all-time series against West Ham.
Newcastle United and West Ham United have faced off 130 times in their history ahead of their fixture tomorrow. The Magpies have won 53 of the matchups, the Hammers 40, and 37 ended level. They first met in 1908 with Newcastle United winning a 2-0 FA Cup fixture. The last time the clubs met outside of league play was an FA Cup match in 1915. After five matches, West Ham finally defeated the Toon in 1923. The Hammers would only win two of the first 13 fixtures between the two clubs.
West Ham United would have a run of their own in the early 1930s. From January 1931 to March 1936, Newcastle only won once out of seven matches. Neither club dominated the 1940s or 1950s, but the Magpies carried a slight upper hand.
The 1970s and 1980s were interesting. From 1970 to April 1977, Newcastle United only lost twice in 15 matches. Then, West Ham went unbeaten in the next 12 face-offs, including an 8-1 win in 1986. Hammers legend and Sky Sports commentator Alvin Martin scored a hat trick in that one. Newcastle United bounced back going undefeated in ten straight, only losing once in a span of 15 matches from 1989 to 1997. West Ham answered with an unbeaten streak of six, taking the rivalry into the 2000s.

Beginning in 2002, Newcastle United retook the driver’s seat. West Ham has only won four of the 22 matches since then. That run includes a 5-0 win for the Toon in 2011, featuring a hat trick from Leon Best. Newcastle United has won two straight, including a 3-0 win earlier this season.
