The Magpies’ steady presence at the back.
Newcastle United have won three consecutive Premier League matches, with another fine showing against Stoke City this past weekend. The back-line and defence have each played their part, as well as strong contributions at the goalkeeper position.
Rob Elliot has been the starter in 2017-18, and he is proving Rafa Benitez’s choice to be correct with each passing week. The Irish international made three saves versus the Potters, and helped to clear out many other dangerous opportunities in Newcastle’s half.
The 31-year-old arrived on Tyneside in the summer of 2011, and he has not always experienced a simple journey towards the starting line-up.
He was handed his first real chance in the relegation-bound 2015-16 campaign, and his determination since that time is truly paying dividends at the moment.
Competition has improved overall form
Constant battles with Tim Krul and Karl Darlow over recent years has seen Elliot work his way to the top, and that desire shines when he is on the pitch.
There was little he could do to stop Xherdan Shaqiri’s quality strike to level the match against Stoke, but his critical moment came just before Newcastle re-claimed the lead in the second half.
A superb header from Mame Diouf appeared destined for the back of the net, except for a fantastic stop from Elliot. Only minutes later, Matt Ritchie’s cross found Jamaal Lascelles in the penalty area for the match-winner.
The Magpies’ run of form has depended on many elements. Joselu has settled into the line-up quickly, Mikel Merino has been outstanding in the midfield and Christian Atsu provides a spark on the wing.
With all of these players displaying such quality in recent weeks, it is understandable to overlook what Elliot has accomplished.
The club was rumoured to be after a number of goalkeepers during the summer transfer period, but their current shot-stopper has been more than the club could have asked for.
