The Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur immediately put pressure on Newcastle United and Rafa Benitez, as two starting defenders left injured in the first half. The back-line has adapted, and it could be a familiar face that can assist further in 2017-18.

Former Magpie Jose Enrique is available, and has reportedly been considering various options in Europe. The Spanish international spent four seasons on Tyneside before joining Liverpool in the summer of 2011.

A competent and experienced left-back, the addition of Enrique could ultimately benefit both sides. Still a popular figure in the North East despite his Merseyside move years ago, the 31-year-old would likely acclimate to his new surroundings very quickly.

The concern would be what made Enrique such a special player, and that would be his pace. Absolutely electric on the left side in the beginning of this decade, there is no guarantee that he will be able to bring the same effect now.

After injuries and form limited his appearances with the Reds, the defender spent last season with Real Zaragoza in Spain’s second division.

First-choice left-back Paul Dummett is working his way back to full fitness, and depth on the back-line is a concern. Until he is back on the pitch, Jose Enrique is a serviceable player still available to sign for Newcastle United.
