Newcastle United: Angel Correa yet another exciting attacking option
By Roy Emanuel
It will not be easy, but the chance of signing Correa brings quite a bit of enthusiasm.
The current transfer window has brought plenty of rumours in regards to strikers, with recent talks of Lucas Perez or Lucas Vazquez being targeted by Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez. Another possibility is a forward also with plenty of La Liga experience – Angel Correa.
Recent reports have linked the Atletico Madrid attacker with the Magpies, and the 22-year-old would certainly push for a major role within Benitez’s squad. The pre-season has seen Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic featured as the main striker in the team’s formation.
The Argentine has displayed fantastic abilities and a remarkable creativity since arriving in the Spanish capital, along with a strong determination to overcome difficult situations. Soon after signing with Los Rojiblancos, Correa was diagnosed with a heart tumour that required surgery.
After missing action for over a year working his way back onto the pitch, he made his debut and has progressed greatly in manager Diego Simeone’s system. Correa has earned several caps with the Argentina national side as well.
Long odds on a potential deal
It is exciting to see Newcastle United considering transfers involving such talent, especially those from some of the best squads in Europe. However, as with some of the other potential additions, the competition that the Magpies face in making the move happen could make it unrealistic.
The budget from owner Mike Ashley is only so much, and may not be enough to convince Correa on a new setting in the North East. The forward’s potential will likely attract interest from many suitors besides Newcastle.
Gayle and Mitrovic have played well this summer, and it will be interesting to see if their output has been enough to influence Benitez’s decisions.
