Newcastle find a win in their final away match of the pre-season.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez arguably faced their toughest opposition of the current pre-season, and looked to be ready for the upcoming Premier League campaign. The Magpies dominated much of the proceedings in a 3-1 victory at Wolfsburg on Wednesday.

Jonjo Shelvey was the captain once again, and another chance was given to Aleksandar Mitrovic at striker. The Serbian forward made the most of his opportunity after a lacklustre showing against Mainz, opening the scoring in the 37th minute.

Matt Ritchie has been one of the United players giving maximum effort throughout the summer, and his stunning free-kick doubled the lead just before half-time.

A questionable challenge in the penalty area from Paul Dummett let the hosts back into the match, with Yunes Malli scoring from the spot to make it 2-1 in the second half.

But Newcastle would not be denied, and would respond soon after with a fantastic counter-attack that sealed the match.

An incredible pass from Javier Manquillo found Shelvey with plenty of space. Moving toward goal, the captain picked out Christian Atsu perfectly to confirm the result.

The Magpies now prepare for their final fixture of the pre-season, when they host Serie A side Hellas Verona on Sunday.

Confidence and form

Perhaps the greatest impact from Wednesday will be felt within the squad itself, as Newcastle looked as good as they have all summer. Passing was accurate, and there seemed to be much more enthusiasm than in the loss at Mainz.

Questions certainly still remain for players like Karl Darlow and Chancel Mbemba ahead of the new campaign, and there still could be additions in the attack before the transfer window officially closes. But there are positives for supporters to take from the victory as the squad build for the months ahead.

The pre-season is nearing its end for Newcastle United. If Wednesday’s victory at Wolfsburg is any indication, the Magpies are prepared to start the term on a good note.
