Newcastle United chased Southampton striker Charlie Austin for some time while he was at Queens Park Rangers, but they could never seal the deal.
Instead, they went for £12m Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – who has managed to hit eight goals this campaign.
What they really needed was someone who could bang in the efforts on a regular basis, a bit like Jermain Defoe managed to do at Sunderland.
