The story of the season has boiled down to one side addressing the weakness in their squad and the other wasting money on vanity signings.

Did Newcastle United really need to bring Georginio Wijnaldum into the team? Did they need Jonjo Shelvey or Henri Saivet? They certainly didn’t need Seydou Doumbia.

While Sunderland brought Jermain Defoe in, who almost certainly saved their season, the Magpies dithered and never brought in a striker to deliver the goods.
