Bordeaux fans throw some serious shade at Newcastle

Bordeaux fans have thrown some serious shade at Newcastle United with a banner during their game at the weekend.

The Magpies have signed both Yoan Gouffran and Henri Saviet from the Ligue 1 side over the past five years, but neither have featured much in the first team this campaign.

During their fixture against Lorient on Saturday, they brought out a massive banner that read “for those who dream of England, there’s still room on Newcastle’s bench.”

Despite a terrible campaign, that now looks likely to end in relegation from the Premier League, both Gouffran and Saivet have hardly played for Newcastle during 2015-2016.

Between them they have over 250 appearances for the French club, but have appeared for just 370 minutes over the course of the British top flight.

Saivet moved to the Magpies in the January transfer window, after playing 18 times for Bordeaux and scoring twice – while Gouffran moved all the way back in 2013.

The French fans are presumably sick of seeing their best players picked off by foreign sides – only for them to wallow on the substitutes bench or in the reserves.

Gouffran’s time at St. James’ Park looks to be over, while Saivet’s is less certain. Should Rafa Benitez stay on as Newcastle managed next season, both players could leave.

After the draw against Aston Villa on Saturday, the Magpies need to beat Tottenham Hotspur and hope Sunderland don’t win against Everton in the middle of the week.

Speaking after the game, Benitez told the BBC: “We were a little bit anxious in the first half. We were not comfortable in possession. You have to take your chances and we didn’t do that.

“We had to change things in the second half. We did that, but it was not enough.”
