Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The stopper was badly hurt playing for the Republic of Ireland against Slovakia, and will be out for around six months – crushing his dreams of playing in the Euro 2016 competition.

Karl Darlow will now have to step in for the last eight games of the campaign as the team seek to avoid relegation.

The former Nottingham Forest man has been thrust into the spotlight, and has only played once in the league so far this campaign.

Teammate Jamaal Lascelles insisted that Darlow could handle the pressure though. “Karl can handle it. Honestly,” the Mirror reported that he said.

“He is a really good goalkeeper, given the chance — which he hasn’t had.”
