Steve McClaren has been fired from his job as head coach of Newcastle United.

The club informed the former England boss of their decision on Friday afternoon, and are expected to hire Rafa Benitez as his replacement.

Toon fans are over the moon with the news, but would do well to reign in any excitement for the mean time.

Benitez has to turn around a sinking ship quickly,  starting with games against Leicester City and Manchester City.

He also has to deal with a squad used to losing, that’s lacking in fight and devoid of leadership. He has taken training ahead of the fixture at the beginning of next week, and now is the time for the fight to start.
