Newcastle United squeaked past Lillestrom in their friendly game on Saturday at La Manga.

Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring early in the proceedings after accepting Ayoze Perez’s pass, rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.

However, the lead didn’t last long as the Norwegian side hit back after a defensive error to score through Bassel Jradi.

Winger Rolando Aarons restored the Magpies lead with an excellent flicked header after coming on as a substitute, and the score stayed that way until the final whistle.

Speaking after the game, head coach Steve McClaren was reported by the Chronicle as saying: “It’s been very worthwhile, and very important to come away. We got away and got into a different environment.

“We get the lads together and you are living with each other 24/7. There has been a lot of talking and a lot of work and it’s been enjoyable too.”
