Hugo Viana

Hugo Viana was tipped to be the next big thing, but Newcastle United cut him lose after only two seasons at Tyneside.

After winning Young European Footballer of the Year, Sir Bobby Robson signed the Portuguese midfielder from Sporting CP for €12 million. Despite the hefty price tag, Viana could never nail down a position in the starting XI – scoring four times.

He returned to Sporting on loan, playing 32 times and scoring six goals – before having spells in Spain and back in his native country. Now 33, Viana plays for Al-Wasl in the UAE.
