Luuk de Jong
In the summer of 2012, Newcastle United were heavily linked with the 21-year-old Dutch international Luuk de Jong, who scored 39 goals in 76 games for FC Twente.
The club, then managed by Steve McClaren, wanted around £20m for the player – something de Jong felt was pricing him out of a move away from the Eredivisie. The Magpies lost the battle for the striker, who eventually joined Borussia Monchengladbach.
The Tyneside club would later grab him on a six-month loan, during which he scored no goals.
