This formation seemed to be the most solid out of the three tested so far. The midfield base of Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum offered the defence a lot more protection, while Kevin Mbabu and Daryl Janmaat coped well down the wings.

The duel attacking threat of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez provided plenty for playmaker Siem de Jong to aim at – and he assisted the first goal with a simple pass into the path of Mitrovic, who finished well.

Ayoze Perez scored again, proving that he should start on Monday, while Jamaal Lascelles had an accomplished game in the middle of defence.

The Spaniard’s effort was a well taken one, after he dummied his marker and curled the shot into the far corner of the net.
