Central Midfield: Lee Clark

Part of the squad that got Newcastle United promoted to the Premier League in 1993, Lee Clark went on to help them finish runners-up in the league two years consecutively. Lee Clark is a memorable Magpie for several reasons.

After making 195 appearances in his first stint with the club, Clark tarnished his legacy by moving to Sunderland in 1997 and helping them win promotion to the Premier League.

This is where things take a funny turn. Clark was spotted wearing a shirt at the FA Cup Final in 1999 with a slogan that said, “Sad Mackem Bastards”, a rather crass term used to refer to the residents of Sunderland. He was shipped off the Fulham after that incident and never played for Sunderland again. He made a final return to the club for one season and showed his dedication to the club where he was once again a fan favorite.

Clark played 217 matches for the club, and proved to the club and fans that he deserved his first team spot.
