Yoan Gouffran thinks he should be a first team regular for Newcastle United, despite hardly playing this season.

The Frenchman is determined to work hard and nail down a place in Steve McLaren’s starting line up – which is fair enough.

However, Toon fans have seen enough of him to realise that nothing good can ever come from an extended spell in the first team for Gouffran.

He has mixed sublime with the inexplicable – often in the same game, while he deployment in a holding midfield role was met with disbelief given that the player often forgets how to tackle.

It showed, at the Magpies went on to concede six goals against a rampant Manchester City after taking the lead through Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, the player said that he couldn’t figure out why the team had conceded all those goals: “Aguero is a very good player, but if we had played like we did in the first half, he wouldn’t have scored those goals. It’s really difficult to explain.”

He continued: “I think we played very well in the first half. We had some chances to score more goals, and we didn’t score.

“I don’t know what changed in the second half. We didn’t defend together.”
