His frustrating spell could soon be coming to an end.
Transfers in and out of the Premier League can bring various results, and this particular fact is especially true for strikers. One that has not worked out as well as hoped could be set to finish soon for Newcastle United with French forward Emmanuel Riviere.
Recent reports have linked the struggling 27-year-old with a return to Ligue 1, this time with FC Metz. Riviere has not played for Newcastle in over a year, last seeing action in March of 2016.
Displaying fantastic potential and excellent scoring abilities during his time at AS Monaco, Riviere arrived at St. James’ Park three years ago. Unfortunately for all involved, little has come from his signing.
Riviere has scored three goals across all competitions for the Magpies, and spent the past season on loan with La Liga side Osasuna. He did not score a goal during the campaign.
Newcastle will be keen to make a potential deal happen, as it appears a new start is needed for both club and player.
The transfer would be a positive for all, as Riviere badly requires a return to form that made him one of Europe’s most exciting prospects only a few years ago. Newcastle supporters are frustrated, and manager Rafa Benitez will need to see consistency up front to once again compete in the Premier League.
For Riviere and FC Metz, it could be the new beginning the player needs and the spark that the club desires as well. Metz finished 14th in Ligue 1 last term, and had great difficulty in the attack. The squad ended with the league’s worst goal differential (-33) in 2016-17.
While his struggles are known, Riviere has the pace and skill to help the side compete in the French first division.
Not every transfer works out for the best. For Emmanuel Riviere and Newcastle United, they will be hoping that a transfer out will be the one that sticks.
