Newcastle United: Despite promotion, transfer progress has been slow

Although they achieved promotion to the Premier League, Newcastle United is struggling to secure signings.

Soccer transfer windows are full of daily rumors. Unfortunately, there are not many rumors that have Newcastle United close to adding more players. Arguably, the biggest news has been that Rafa Benitez will stay at Newcastle for the foreseeable future. He made Christian Atsu’s loan deal from Chelsea a permanent move weeks ago, but nothing significant since.

NUFC is coming off a title season in the Championship and a return to the Premier League. They also have Rafa, one of the top managers in Europe. None of those facts have Newcastle in line to make the next step in the upcoming roster turnover this summer.

They could be closer behind the scenes than they appear in reports, but the social media age usually gets a beat on the situations as they transpire.

Tammy Abraham is said to be choosing between joining Newcastle United or Brighton on loan, but there is no end in sight for his decision. Rumors of a Rafa-Pepe Reina reunion have been rained on by Pepe’s agent. He suggested the goalkeeper will stay at Napoli, but there are also stories that he may be in line to return to the EPL with Newcastle. Fulham indicates long time target Tom Cairney won’t be leaving. Former Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo chose Villarreal over signing Tyneside.

This could end up being a wildly successful transfer window for Newcastle United. Unfortunately for Toon Army, it is starting off slow. Supporters crave news and excitement, but it’s been a lot of empty noise so far for their Magpies.
