New singing Andros Townsend was unexpectedly absent from the Newcastle United squad to face Stoke City on Wednesday.

The winger was missed, as head coach Steve McClaren chose to play Yoan Gouffran out wide instead – something that did not pay off.

Townsend could also miss the game on Saturday against Bournemouth, although McClaren refused to give a straight yes or no when asked if he would play.

“Andros Townsend missed Wednesday’s defeat with a hamstring problem, and he is touch-and-go to be fit for Bournemouth.

“McClaren would not give a straight answer when he was asked if Townsend would be fit after the Stoke game, saying he would be “assessed” before a decision is made,” the Chronicle wrote about the issue.
